Cafe confessions: our insta snapshots show the best of and brilliantly give our lives that smooth and suave veneer. A recent excursion to our usual cafe was anything but that. Whenever we go or if I am there by myself, it is the one place outside my home that lends that private feeling where I can immerse into a creative bubble. There seems to be an unspoken code amongst the folks there that if one has a laptop open, or is reading a book or is scribbling in a journal, do not disturb. My time at coffee shops is definitely “me time” where I am able to refuel, recharge and decompress. I never go there in order to meet new people. Not that there’s anything wrong with that whatsoever, it’s just simply not the time and place for me with that.

Suffice to say while we were at our regular spot recently, and I was in the zone journaling, I heard a stranger ask loudly, “What are you writing about?” A reasonable question but it totally caught me off guard. I think I just said it was my personal journal and politely smiled. The truth was that I was writing about my dad and the grieving process and though I’m fairly good at keeping my outward composure when needed, my insides were feeling raw and vulnerable. I ended up letting myself get pulled into a conversation that I didn’t want to have to begin with, then I nervously rambled on and on (I do that sometimes when I feel uncomfortable) sharing more than I wanted to, and you couldn’t get me and my son outta that place fast enough. #introvertproblems ??♀️?

Ah well. It happens, right? The awkward moments of our humanity. So there’s a not so smooth snippet of the life behind a seemingly peaceful photo. At least it makes for a good laugh (in hindsight).
