#SpeakingInDance | “You walk out and you’re sweeping around like you have a ball gown on, but then you tap your foot and you slap your feet and you snap,” says @ashleybouder of her role as the woman in the green dress in “Dances at a Gathering,” the quietly dazzling 1969 #JeromeRobbins ballet, set to #Chopin. “You do things where you take yourself very seriously and not so seriously. It’s kind of a make-fun-of-yourself solo.” In the hourlong ballet, at @nycballet this week, Ashley appears midway through. “You get real ballet lovers, and they’re with you a thousand percent,” she said. “Then you get an audience that doesn’t come to the ballet all the time and halfway through they’re kind of like, how long is this? If you get a giggle out of the audience, then you know they’re alive.” Dancers come and go in this intricate array of solos, duets and larger groups, and all the while the ballet maintains its singular intimacy. “There are no screens up there,” Ashley told the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ writer @giadk. “There’s just a lot of chiffon, pointe shoes, some hairspray and Chopin.
