#Iceland’s Nordic climate and the geothermal steam rising from the tectonic fault line that runs beneath the country provide two things the computers that run the world’s economy need in seemingly endless supply: cooling and electricity. But the voracious electricity demand of Iceland’s multiplying data centers is now testing the country’s environmental values.⠀

By 2030, data centers and all internet-related activity—from streaming video to analyzing financial data to storing software, photos and emails—could use more electricity than all of China did this year. Iceland is riding the boom to satisfy the world’s newest power-hungry industry, but many of the country’s lawmakers say they worry this is putting Iceland’s pristine nature at risk—the main draw for millions of tourists that visit the country every year.⠀
