The night before he was assassinated, Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. spoke of a young fan writing him after he was stabbed and nearly killed 10 years earlier in Harlem. The fan wrote that she was happy Dr. King didn't sneeze and die from the wound, after his doctor told reporters that a sneeze could have killed him due to the blade coming so close to his aorta. Dr. King mentioned the fan's letter in the refrain of his final "mountaintop" speech, recounting the civil-rights advances that might never have happened had he died a decade prior. The source of the letter remained a mystery until WSJ reporter Cameron McWhirter managed to find it after poring over an obscure archive of every letter and card— more than 1,800 in all—sent to King in the hospital in 1958.
