#movementmondays Donald Glover is an American actor, writer, director, and producer. He is also a Grammy Award winning singer, songwriter, and rapper under the stage name Childish Gambino. In 2006, Glover graduated from NYU Tisch School of the Arts with a degree in Dramatic Writing. At the young age of 23, Glover became a writer with occasional cameos on NBC’s sitcom 30 Rock. He got his breakout role in 2009 on NBC’s Community. Since, Glover can be seen in films such as The Lazarus Effect, Magic Mike XXL, The Marian, and Spider-Man Homecoming. Later this year, he will be seen starring in Solo: A Star Wars Story and in 2019 his voice will be heard as Simba in the live action Lion King. Currently, Glover is the creator, writer, executive producer, occasional director of the critically acclaimed FX comedy-drama show Atlanta. In a recent profile in the New Yorker, a confident Glover exposed an honest truth that black comedy creators in Hollywood not only have to think they are the best—they also have to be the very best. TV executives still often see diversity as a break from the norm, which raises the stakes higher. “I knew what FX wanted from me,” Glover said. “They were thinking it’d be me and Craig Robinson”—the “Hot Tub Time Machine” actor—“horse-tailing around, and it’ll be kind of like ‘Community,’ and it’ll be on for a long time. I was Trojan-horsing FX. If I told them what I really wanted to do, it wouldn’t have gotten made.” Atlanta not only has broken many rules but it is also the most watched comedy in the network’s history. Glover has gone on to win multiple awards for the show including two Golden Globe Awards in 2017 for Best Television Series and Best Actor (Musical or Comedy). Also in 2017, Glover not only won the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series but he made history by becoming the first black person to win a Emmy for the category of Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series. “I tell stories because that’s the best way of spreading information,” he said. “We’re all tricking and toying and playing with each other’s senses to affect this thing hidden inside our skulls.” Season 2 of Atlanta is airing on FX now!
