#movementmondays Yvonne Orji is a Nigerian-American actress. Born in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, Orji moved to Maryland when she was 6. There she received a master’s degree in public health at George Washington University. She was supposed to be the doctor of the family but realized she wasn’t a fan of blood. While getting her master’s she entered The Miss Nigeria in America Pageant where she performed stand-up comedy as her talent. Writing about her own experiences of being Nigerian in America, people really responded and even asked for her to perform at weddings and baby showers. In 2009, after grad school and spending time working in Liberia, Orji confessed her ambitions to her family and moved to NYC to pursue a career in comedy, which was a lot more difficult than expected. However, Orji decided to create her own web comedy FirstGen about being first generation Nigerian in the US, which caught Issa Rae’s eye. In 2015, she landed her breakout role on HBO’s Insecure. Since, she has appeared in a couple episodes of Jane the Virgin. Next, Orji will be seen in the comedy film Night School alongside Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish. It was just announced that Orji joined the cast of Awesomeness Films YA sci-fi drama, Spontaneous. So proud of this woman!!! @yvonneorji
