When the Boshin War broke out in Japan in 1868, women weren’t officially allowed to enlist. But that didn’t stop a fierce female warrior named Nakano Takeko from joining the fight. She led the Women’s Army, a group of equally brave and determined female fighters, using the Naginata (a Japanese pole-arm). During a key battle against the Imperial forces, Nakano was mortally wounded. To keep her head from becoming a prize for the opposing side, her sister and fellow soldier was tasked with cutting it off. Her head was then buried under a pine tree, where a monument now stands in her honor. In honor of #WomensHistoryMonth, we're spotlighting lesser-known heroes—from recent and ancient history—who helped pave the way for other women.
