The Mirabal Sisters—also known as Las Mariposas—grew up under dictator Rafael Trujillo’s reign over the Dominican Republic, and literally gave their lives working to end his regime. Their beef with Trujillo started when sister Minerva allegedly rebuffed his sexist advances: As the legend goes, Trujillo asked Minerva, “What if I send my subjects to conquer you?” And she answered: “What if I conquer your subjects?” Together the sisters helped lead a middle class-centered revolt against Trujillo’s dictatorship, and continued their work even after the dictator had them jailed. When even prison couldn’t stop their rebellion, Trujillo had three out of the four sisters killed. He was assassinated less than a year later. To this day, the sisters are remembered as crusading feminists; in 1999, the United Nations named November 25 the “International Day for the Elimination of Violence” in their honor.
In honor of #WomensHistoryMonth, we're spotlighting lesser-known heroes—from recent and ancient history—who helped pave the way for other women.
