Born into an Osage Native American family in Oklahoma, Maria Tallchief became one of the world’s most famous ballerinas. When she started dancing professionally, some encouraged her to adopt a Russian stage name—with one insider even going so far as to suggest changing her name to Tallchieva. But Tallchief was proud of her Osage heritage and kept her last name, becoming a highly visible advocate for Native Americans in ballet. She went on to be the first American to dance with the Paris Opera Ballet and in 1996 she received the Kennedy Center Honors for her artistic contributions in the US.
