Stephanie Kwolek was a pioneering woman of STEM, and a chemist whose work was ahead of its time. In 1965, she made an unexpected discovery—she was able to create synthetic fibers that were so strong, even bullets couldn’t penetrate them. Today those fibers are called Kevlar and they’re used in bulletproof vests. Kwolek’s technology has single-handedly saved countless lives—and earned her the National Medal of Technology.
