Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute scientists have found that poaching is an emerging crisis in Myanmar for Asian elephants. But unlike African elephants, Asian elephants are being poached for their skin. That means males, females and calves are all victims of poaching. And since elephants reproduce very slowly, that could have dire consequences for the species. Scientists discovered the crisis after 7 elephants they were tracking with satellite GPS collars on were poached within one year. Additional surveys found many more elephants had been the victims of poaching. They found 19 elephants, including the 7 with satellite GPS collars, had been poached in less than two years. And as many as 40 elephants may have been poached in southern central Myanmar. Conservation efforts for elephants in Myanmar may have to prioritize anti-poaching efforts, instead of mitigating human-elephant conflict, which scientists had thought was the biggest threat to Asian elephants. #WeSaveSpecies @conservationnation @スミソニアン博物館 @fonznationalzoo
