Photo by @migeophoto // Walking through Okunoin Cemetery, the oldest and largest cemetery in Japan, is an ethereal experience. The morning sun burns the mist from the moss and over 200,000 people continue resting. The trees are massive, like the Muir Woods in California. They tower and create a cool and musty microclimate. I wandered the cemetery for hours, learning the symbolism of the lamps and baby Buddhas. If you’ve seen Kubo and the Two Strings (which you should, if you haven’t) you might recognize this place as the inspiration for the movie’s final scene. It is the most poignant, soulful, and natural place I’ve found to remember the dead. // #okunoin #okunoincemetery #forestcemetery #koyasan #sacredmountain #japan #okunoinjapan #japanesecemetery
