The early 1970s found Cy Twombly moving away from painting to focus on drawing and works on paper. ‘On Returning from Tonnicoda’ belongs to a distinctive set of eight works on paper that the artist completed in August 1973.

The title relates to the artist’s time spent in a small village in Central Italy, surrounded by a vast forest of oak and chestnut trees. The setting made a powerful impression on Twombly, who later described landscape as his ‘first love’. ⠀
