On view at our London gallery: this painting by René Magritte features one of his best-loved motifs, the ‘leaf-tree’.

‘I am trying at the moment to discover what it is in a tree that belongs to it specifically, but which would run counter to our concept of a tree,’ Magritte wrote to the Surrealist poet André Breton in July 1934, 14 years before he created this work.
