The Rev. Billy Graham, counselor to Presidents and the most widely heard Christian evangelist in history, has died at age 99. In TIME's full obituary, David Van Biema writes, Graham preached for over six decades, in 185 countries and territories—and, as late as 2005, attracted crowds of 242,000. Throughout his lifetime, Graham—seen here in front of the Kolekole Cross in Oahu in 1963—would reach hundreds of millions. "With the possible exception of Pope John Paul II," Van Biema writes, "Graham can be said to have touched more lives for Jesus than anyone else in the modern era and to have extolled him directly to a greater swath of humanity than anyone else in history." In an interview with TIME in 1993, Graham modestly recalled his achievements: "I don’t know why God has allowed me to have [all] this ... I'll have to ask him when I get to heaven."
