Red Jackson, Harlem, New York, 1948. Throughout February, TIME is featuring images by legendary photographer Gordon Parks. The photo essay "Harlem Gang Leader" was his second major assignment for @life. Parks spent four weeks with Red Jackson, the 17-year-old leader of the Midtowners gang, and other members. "His goal," as @johnedwinmason wrote for TIME in 2016, "was to show that juvenile delinquents were teenagers whose lives could be turned around if the right social service agencies intervened." He added: "While the tone of the published photo essay was generally sympathetic to Jackson and the other gang members, it emphasized violence and slighted the potential for rehabilitation." In a memoir, Parks, who died in 2006, recalled the many sympathetic letters—and some not—that poured in. Upon the offer of a staff position with LIFE, Parks accepted, becoming the magazine's first black photographer. In collaboration with the @gordonparksfoundation, the second half of the late photographer’s two-part exhibition—titled ‘I Am You: Part Two’—opened at the @jackshainman gallery in New York on Feb. 15. The exhibition focuses on some of Parks’ most iconic imagery relating to civil rights, from the late 1940s through the 1960s.
