At 17 I began coaching the youth team I started on at age 11. I began coaching because the team was at risk for dissipating because the gym (@atlantarocksclimbing) couldn’t find a head coach. This team was unique in the sense that each and every member received a scholarship to be on the team. Therefore finances was not a barrier for the kids who tried out and were accepted onto the youth team. As I got older I saw the value and impact that program had on many kids who maybe wouldn’t have had the opportunity without a scholarship. At a young age, I saw coaching as a way to give back to the community that had already given me so much to be thankful for. ~ However, I realized I wanted something where I could make an impact on our community as a whole (not just our climbing community). For a couple years I struggled to figure out what that ‘thing’ would be. And now I know. (Drum roll....) ~ I am starting a non profit (name TBD) aimed at empowering adolescent girls to develop and express their identities and strengths through climbing and outdoor adventure. Most, but not all, will be under resourced girls who will receive scholarships to join our after school programs and summer camps. This is my biggest project to date - definitely the scariest one. But one that makes my heart sing when I think about the potential we will help harness and develop, the confidence we will help grow, and the dreams we will help be realized for these adolescent girls in their delicate years. ??????❤️
