People who think Africa has no great architectural traditions should go to #Ethiopia, where the first churches were literally carved out of the ground some 2,000 years ago. The idea for this one came to King #Lalibela in a dream, and he hired workmen to chisel it out the volcanic bedrock beneath his birthplace. You enter the #church from the stairs that descend from the right side of this picture, which was taken on a crazy flight in my first motorized #paraglider some 20 years ago.
