Our guest editor for this week's issue, The Optimists, is @ビル・ゲイツ. In a conversation with Nancy Gibbs, who served as TIME's editor in chief, he spoke about what gives him hope about the world's future. "Well, things are very different than several hundred years ago. Life span has more than doubled over that time. And even if you take a shorter timeframe, say, 30 years ago, our understanding of treating women properly, providing gay rights—we are far better off today and our focus is on those things that remain to be done," Gates says. "There are certainly tons and tons of those. But only by seeing that we’ve made progress and taking the lessons of where that’s gone faster than we expected and where it’s gone slower, can we actually accelerate and reduce these huge problems that still remain."
