The glittering crystal ball in New York City's Times Square dropped with a burst of confetti and dazzling fireworks on Jan. 1, as revelers rang in 2018 with the second-coldest celebration there on record. It was only 10 degrees Fahrenheit (-12 Celsius)—just slightly warmer than the coldest ball drop celebration, at 1 degree (-17) in 1917. While less crowded than other years, partygoers bundled up in extra layers, warm hats and face masks, and danced and jogged in place to ward off the biting cold. Tarana Burke, the creator of the #MeToo movement who was recently recognized as one of the Silence Breakers, TIME's Person of the Year 2017—pushed the button to drop the crystal ball. "Auld Lang Syne" and "New York, New York" played as the crowds cheered. The Associated Press reports there was also tighter security than ever after two terrorist attacks and a rampaging SUV driver who plowed into a crowd at the very spot where last night's celebrations took place.
