It has been a long, rough ride for the cowboys of Kazakhstan. They’re descendants of the nomadic herders who roamed across Central Asia until 1864, when Russia declared that it could no longer tolerate their “turbulent and unsettled character.” Steadily stripped of their pastureland, and then of their #cattle, nomads became hired hands on collective farms. Today, those farms have been replaced by big private ranches and small family-owned herds. But life on the steppe is so harsh that the cowboys rarely want their own children to follow them into the saddle. Erlan Kozhakov, a 63-year-old herder, has 6 kids, and all but one followed his advice. Pausing for a cigarette while his sheep and cows vanished into the mist recently, Erlan said he’d seen American cowboys in films. “They have it so easy over there compared with us,” said Erlan, who earns less than $300 a month. He recently bought himself a new pair of leather and rubber riding boots lined with felt but still has cold feet after riding around each day from early morning until evening in frigid weather. Here, he guided 850 sheep onto a farm. Swipe left and then visit the link in our profile to see more photos by @andreabruce.
