From @nytarchives: Wine, more than hard liquor, “seemed to be the favorite drink” on December 31, 1971, when young revelers gathered in Times Square to wait for midnight. When one young woman fainted, a police officer told @ニューヨーク・タイムズ that it was “as much the wine as the crowd.” “For the most part, the crowds were happy and orderly, but one major event hung over the celebrations: the Vietnam War. In the Times Square turnout, groups of antiwar demonstrators mingled with clusters of ‘Jesus People,’ each with their own banners,” @ニューヨーク・タイムズ reported. And in a New Year’s Eve speech, Governor Rockefeller said it was “important that we remember a group of New Yorkers who cannot partake fully of the joyous seasonal spirit. These are the more than 100 families from our state who have sons, husbands, fathers in the prison camps of North Vietnam.” Long before the ball dropped that day, our photographer Carl T. Gossett took this photo of children sending seasonal greetings into the sky on behalf of the March of Dimes from the 86th floor of the Empire State Building. The event, which took place every year, was part of a campaign for funding. #HappyNewYear
