While growing up in Bogotá, Colombia, Linda Riveros said, she had no friends. She was born with tetra-amelia syndrome, a rare disorder characterized by the absence of limbs. Her only outlet was her art; Linda started painting with her feet at 7. Over the years, she learned how to bathe and dress herself, wash her clothes, open doors, and embroider and sew clothing — all with her feet. When Linda was 12, she was offered the opportunity to receive prosthetic arms free of charge, but refused. “I didn’t want them because I didn’t want to go against the word of God,” she said. “If he wanted me like this, it’s for a reason, so why should I try to change it?” In 2010, Linda moved to New York. This month, she had her first solo art exhibit, “Painting With My Feet,” at the Robeson Gallery in Peekskill, north of NYC. “The beautiful thing about this exhibition is that it shows that there are no limitations,” Linda said. “Everything is possible. Limitations only exist in your head.” | @cathcharitiesny, one of the 8 organizations supported by the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ Neediest Cases Fund, gave Linda $366 for painting supplies and canvases and helped arranged the exhibition.
