On holiday weekends, visitors gather at the dunes from all over the western U.S. and Mexico to race dune bikes, buggies, and other 4-wheel drive vehicles. This 100,000-acre haven for off-road car fanatics is part of the Imperial Sand Dunes, formed from windblown beach sands and the dry bed of Lake Cahuilla, the Salton Sea's ancient ancestor. With up to 150,000 visitors Thanksgiving is the biggest weekend - thereby briefly more than doubling the population of Imperial County. The combination of daring races and excessive amounts of alcohol has caused a number of fatalities in past years.
