Arctic cookie stars may look like sweet treats, but I’d advise not biting into one if you spot it laying on a rock off the coast of the northwestern United States. They’re considered quite rare and absolutely won’t taste like a sugar cookie. These sea stars reproduce both sexually and asexually. Embryos hatch into larvae and then metamorphosize into the star shape pictured here. They can grow up to 11 cm across and feed on sea sponges.
These sea stars were photographed at the @AlaskaSeaLifeCenter, a public aquarium focused on education, wildlife response, and scientific research.
