Diamondback terrapins like this one photographed at @disealab in Alabama are believed to be the only species of turtle that makes its home exclusively in brackish water-- water that is slightly salty, but not as salty as the ocean. They can tolerate high temperatures and are often found basking in the sun during the day while at night they bury themselves in soft mud. These turtles have adapted well to their aquatic environments with webbed feet, deep shells, and muscular jaws used to crush shelled prey. They’re distributed along the coast of the North America from Massachusetts all the way down to southern Texas.
