John Singer Sargent’s ‘Girl reading by a stream’ was created during the artist’s experimental period of painting en plein-air, in an Impressionist style close to Claude Monet’s.

Sargent had probably known Monet since around 1876, but their relationship was closest in the mid-1880s, near the time of this work.
