This was my first glimpse into the unwavering commitment of these keepers and the sacrifices they make to protect endangered animals. The calf he rested his head on was orphaned when poachers killed his mother and the calf was immediately moved to Lewa, about 50 miles away. Much needed attention has been focused on the plight of wildlife and the conflict between heavily armed poachers and increasingly militarized wildlife rangers. But very little has been said about the indigenous communities on the front lines of the poaching wars and the incredible work they do to protect these animals. They hold the key to saving Africa’s great animals. I'm Ami Vitale (@amivitale) and I've spent the past 8 years discovering and documenting unique conservation efforts in northern Kenya that protect wildlife, people, and cultures alike.
