Picasso, who was born and raised in Málaga, began this piece on 19 January 1937 – just two days after the attack. It is the first directly political painting of his career and a defiant show of support for the Spanish Republicans.

Along with 'Guernica' and 'Sueño y Mentira de Franco (‘Dream and Lie of Franco’)', this work stands as one of the most important paintings the artist made in reaction to the Spanish Civil War.
