@renaudphilippe photographed these wolf puppies playing at Zoo Académie, a zoo and training facility about 2 hours from Montreal. To assure wolf pups that humans are tolerable, people must spend 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with them for weeks on end. Dog puppies, on the other hand, will quickly attach to any human within reach. Jacinthe Bouchard, Zoo Académie’s owner, has trained domestic and wild animals all over the world. This past spring she bred 2 litters of wolf pups. Then unusually bad flooding of the St. Lawrence threatened the den, so Jacinthe had to remove them at about 7 days old instead of the usual 2 weeks. Then began the arduous process of socializing the pups. As Jacinthe noted, “we don’t shower” in the early days, to let the pups get a clear sense of who they’re smelling. That’s important — both wolves and dogs go through a critical period when they learn who their friends and family are. With #wolves, that time is thought to start at about 2 weeks, when they’re deaf and blind. In dogs, it starts at about 4 weeks, when they can see, smell and hear.
