Can you tell an etching from a lithograph? Here’s our illustrated guide:

1. Etching: The image is scratched into a metal plate covered with wax. The etching needle's precision allows the image to be delicate and detailed. When the plate is inked and pressed, an indentation is left by the plate’s edges. (Lucian Freud, ‘Head of An Irishman’ (detail), 1999. $30,000–50,000).

2. Lithography: The artist draws onto stone using a grease-based medium, for example lithographic crayons, brushes and pencils. Separate stones are used for complex images of multiple colours. (Marc Chagall, ‘La Joie’ (detail), 1980. $40,000–50,000).
