According to the legend, the column made of salt and rocks standing on the Southern shore of the Dead Sea is the statue of prophet Lot's wife. This geomorphological formation is considered as a material incarnation of the myth. According to the Bible story, the dissolute life of the inhabitants of Sodom angered God. In response, God destroyed the whole region in a deluge of fire, salt and sulphur. On God's advice, Lot left Sodome with his wife and daughters. Though they were not allowed to look back towards Sodom while leaving, his wife looked back, seeing the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. She was covered of ashes and salt that froze her for ever on the edge of the Dead Sea.

Sometimes as a photographer, you have to show an idea, a legend, a myth. You find the place, but there is nothing remained from the ancient time. The only thing you have to help are your imagination, your creativity and your poetry.

This reportage on the Myths of the Bible made for National Geographic is part of my long-term project about the three monotheist religions, on the path of Abraham, the founding father of Judaism, a key figure of Christianity and one of the five great prophets of Islam.
