In honor of Indigenous People’s Day: In the Cordillera del Condor region in the #Amazon of southeast Ecuador, a Shuar matriarch enjoys spending time with her grandchildren…the Shuar are an indigenous people of Ecuadorean and Peruvian Amazon, and have a proud history of centuries of resistance to the Spanish conquistadors and other invaders into their territory. They face a new threat now, as a series of large-scale open-pit metal mines are being built in the Condor and on ancestral Shuar territory. The largely peaceful resistance of the Shuar to the mining projects has come at a high price, with three Shuar activists dead, a military and police clamp down across much of the region, and many leaders imprisoned and others in danger of arrest. Meanwhile the first copper mine, the Mirador Mine, begins production and other open-pit mines are being planned is this pristine and biodiverse region. On this Indigenous People’s Day, I would like to honor all indigenous peoples who are continuing the struggle for their land, their families, communities and way of life, whatever the cost...and to celebrate the diversity, rich traditions, strength, resistance of the numerous indigenous peoples of the Americas who have survived 525 years of injustice, racism, and brutality in the colonial system. In other countries of the Americas, today is known as Dia de la Raza, Dia de la Descolonizacion, Dia de la #Resistencia #Indigena.
