Photo by @FransLanting Red dunes speckled with vegetation stretch like tendrils across the desert landscape of NamibRand, one of the largest private reserves in Africa, covering more than 800 square miles inland from the coast of central Namibia. Winds have sculpted the Namib Desert into fantastic dunescapes colored red by iron oxide. The sand contains just enough moisture to sustain a few hardy plants and animals. The reserve was created from 13 overgrazed, failing sheep farms. Domestic livestock and fences were removed, native animals including hartebeest, zebra, giraffes, and cheetah were reintroduced—and the vegetation and wildlife rebounded. High-quality, low-impact ecotourism now generates the income that funds ongoing conservation at NamibRand—a model for reserves not only in Africa but around the world.
