Photo by @franslanting “Lilies of the Desert” I slipped into a clear lagoon in Botswana’s Okavango Delta to photograph a patch of water lilies anchored in desert sand. To me, these lilies symbolized the essential wonder of the Okavango Delta: This great wetland, with its abundance of life, is really just a thin sheet of water stretched across the Kalahari Desert. Water lilies are among the oldest lineages of flowering plants, dating back nearly 140 million years. This is one of the signature images for my project “LIFE: A Journey Through Time,” which we produced as a multimedia symphony that features my images and the music of Philip Glass. LIFE is a lyrical interpretation of the story of life on Earth, from the Big Bang to the present. The LIFE symphony has been staged around the world.
