It’s a place that I know uniquely well having spent several months there over the years working with these astonishing cats and I’ve got Bandhavgarh’s most renowned and knowledgeable tiger experts to guide us in our search. The 11 day trip will give us 8 full days in the Park as we explore their pristine forest home, listening out for the alarm barks of the Hanuman langur, the chital and sambar deer, the tiger’s three principal prey species. The trip runs from the 14th to the 25th November and with a number of places already reserved there are only a limited number of spaces available. This image represents probably the most extraordinary piece of tracking that I’ve ever witnessed after hearing the distant roar of a roaming male. We immediately set off in what seemed to me the opposite direction, passing vehicle after vehicle that was waiting on the side of the road as I wanted to do. Still we continued on, even climbing steeply in the jeep, up narrow, winding and rutted tracks, 1 mile, then 2 and on we went. Cresting a ridge we were completely alone, every other vehicle in the park waiting miles away but by now I’d decided to simply trust our guides' knowledge. Suddenly we slowed to a stop and my guide and friend simply turned and whispered to me, ‘wait, he’ll come from there’. Within seconds I could hear the gentle padding as paw met leaf so I whispered to the driver to let the jeep roll forward, increasing our distance and improving our perspective. And in that moment the legendary B2, or Sundar, emerged from the forest, his breath backlit by the rising sun. To this day this experience lives with me and even as I write this I can’t quite believe what I was privileged to experience.
