How do families around the world spend their vacations? @nytmag explored that question over the weekend in its annual #NYTMagVoyages issue. This photograph, by Joakim Eskildsen, appeared on the cover. “It’s extremely rare for nudity to appear anywhere in this magazine, let alone on the cover,” wrote Jake Silverstein, @nytmag’s editor in chief, “but this picture neatly captured some of the themes of the issue: the joy of family and the world’s abundant beauty — and also the jarring cultural differences in how we take vacations.” In the deciduous forests of southern #Estonia, where Joakim captured this scene, small cabins made of logs dot the countryside. These are smoke saunas — places to bathe bodies and cleanse spirits. Generations of Estonian families have marked the special occasions of life and death and healing in these small cottages and communal sweats. “Estonians used to believe in ancestors and in nature,” said Mariann Liimal, whose family was photographed for the issue. “We were never really Christians, more natural, we used to talk to the trees. We had sacred spaces to heal ourselves, like in the sauna.” Visit the link in our profile to see more Voyages from @nytmag.
