In #Ibusuki, at the southern end of Japan, spagoers soak in sand. The black-sand treatment is a specialty of the area, which lies in the shadow of the Kaimondake volcano, which last erupted in 885. Visitors spend 15 minutes buried in hot, mineral-laden volcanic sediment followed by a soak in nearby springs. ‘‘The sand bath’s heat is different from a sauna,” explains Noriko Nomaguchi, who’s pictured here on the left. “A sauna delivers heat instantly, and a sand bath delivers heat slowly.’’ She added: ‘‘I felt the sand getting warmer and could feel more of its weight as time passed. Then I was was sweating and, little by little, came to feel comfortable when buried. After it was cleared off, I felt released from heat and weight — the sea wind made me cool and comfortable.’’ @moisessaman of @Magnum Photos took this photo of Noriko (and a neighboring spagoer) while on assignment for @nytmag in #Japan. We’ll be sharing more photos from @nytmag’s Voyages issue over the next couple of days. Visit the link in our profile to see more. #NYTMagVoyages
