The Dutch fashion designer Iris Van Herpen is considered one of the most innovative and consequential fashion designers currently at work. Her designs unite the most forward-looking technology with artisanal craftsmanship. Think: a minidress that resembles a stylized skeleton and was 3-D-printed with a white synthetic polymer. That dress was acquired by the Metropolitan Museum in 2012—a fate befalling more and more of her designs that end up in museums.
