Photo by @bethjwald / “In the ringing emptiness I pause to hear the hiss of the swift torrent under ice, then turn in a slow circle, absorbing all this mighty weight of rock and snow and sky. A monumental glacier fills the southern blue like a frozen waterfall, but the sun flowing down that wall of ice has not yet touched the canyon rim over my head. I climb on through gray daybreak worlds toward the light.” From “The Snow Leopard” by Peter Matthiessen A year ago today, I also paused in “the ringing emptiness”, of #Dolpo, a remote region northwestern #Nepal, to take this photo of high, scoured ridges and distant peaks, along the same route that Peter Matthiessen trod in 1973, a journey that became the basis for his iconic book, The Snow Leopard. Along with Matthiessen was wildlife biologist George Schaller and last year, Schaller made his first trip back to Dolpo, to re-trace the journey he made in 1973. Accompanying him on this return was Peter Matthiessen’s son, Alex, and Tshiring Lama, a young biologist from Dolpo who is studying the snow leopard in her #mountain homeland. We spent five weeks exploring the surreally beautiful corner of the #Himalaya, looking at changes to communities, wildlife and habitat. In part based on recommendations made by Schaller after the 1973 trip, a large part of Upper Dolpo is now a National Park – Shey Phoksundo National Park. Thanks to National Geographic for a grant that helped support the project.
