Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto / Mute swan in a torrential downpour – I can understand why a lot of people will pack up their camera gear when it starts to rain but if you can endure, if you can protect both yourself and your camera gear then working in the rain will immediately add another dimension to your images. Of course it is a little bit miserable and the water will usually find its way up your sleeves or down the back of your neck but I would suggest at least giving it a go at some point. I protect my lenses with a @kevinkeatley_photography waterproof lens and camera cover and as long as my camera is protected then I can usually stick it out for a while. On this occasion I knew that there was some torrential rain forecast, the sort of rain showers that turn the streets into rivers and bring our road network into chaos so I headed out to one of my usual swan sites. This again is an advantage of working locally, and with both familiar and accessible species because I needed to be certain that when the rain came that I would have a good chance of having a subject in front of me. As such the species with which I’ve worked with in heavy rain to date are swans, coots and mallards and whilst this is a very straightforward image and the light is a bit rubbish the image is at least of interest because of the heavy rain fall. So if you can then give it a go. Protect your camera gear properly, get your water proofs on and go and have an explore, you never know what kind of image you might come back with.
