Photo by @melissafarlow | On Inis Oirr, the highest point of the island where is where 14th century O’Brien’s Castle is perched. Believed to be the oldest ruin on the of Aran Islands, I was there with exploring with #natgeostudentexpeditions.
Amazed we were free to climb on remnants from such fascinating history. Early tribal kingdoms divided Ireland warring and competing for resources. The O’Flaherty’s took over the castle from the ruling O’Brien’s. But then the O’Flaherty family was driven west by Norman conquerors who fought ferociously to maintain their influence. O’Brien’s Castle was overtaken and partially destroyed in the mid-1600s when Cromwellian forces dominated.
