Photo by @jodymacdonaldphoto // The Naxi are mountain people that wandered to the edge of the Tibetan plateau and found a place to call home in the county of Lijiang in the northern Yunnan Province of China. The Naxi are one of the best known Chinese ethnic groups and one of the most visited by tourists. Approximately 300,000 Naxi live in Yunnan today along with more than half of the country’s minority groups, providing a glimpse into China’s hugely varied mix of humanity. It is often said, that religiously speaking, the Naxi believe in everything: Bon, totemism, shamanism, animism, Buddhism, Dao. A reflection of their long heritage as a cultural crossroads among the many peoples of Tibet, China, India, and Southeast Asia. If you travel to the Yunnan region be sure to wander through the ancient villages of the area where you can still experience their rich cultural heritage and traditions.
