This weekend, the photographer @deidre returned to the 2017 @Afropunk Festival while on assignment for @nytimesfashion. Since 2005, the festival has brought an impressive contingent of artists to Brooklyn each summer. Key acts this weekend at Commodore Barry Park included @saintrecords, @kaytranada and @serpentwithfeet. Offstage, though, the scene was just as impressive. @cordell.louis, pictured in the 2nd photo here, had his suit custom-made for the festival. “Afropunk is like the black fashion Met Gala,” he said. Jarae Holieway (@blacmagic_woman), the stylist and model pictured in the first photo, has been to #Afropunk once before. “To me,” she said, “it means that a lot of people can come together in a space that’s very safe for creativity and love and networking and sharing good times together amongst all the chaos that’s going on in the world.” Swipe left to see more of @deidre’s photos of #streetstyle at Afropunk.
