The rains from Tropical Storm #Harvey kept pounding the Houston region today, stranding thousands of residents who frantically waited to be rescued. With record floodwaters, the region now looks like an inland sea dotted by islands, and officials fear the worst is yet to come — about 2 feet of rain is still expected to lash this paralyzed city. About 30,000 people will seek emergency shelter, and 450,000 are likely to seek federal aid, U.S. officials say. As San Antonio, Dallas, Austin and other cities prepare thousands of beds for new waves of people fleeing the rising floodwaters, those who’ve already found dry ground are a glimpse of the potential humanitarian emergency on the horizon. They have few clothes, no cars or way home, and are living in a haze of uncertainty, searching for answers from home as to what — and who — survived. @alyssaschukar took this photo of Mareya Trevino and her dog Lexi arriving at a temporary shelter at the George R. Brown Convention Center in downtown #Houston this morning. Visit the link in our profile for live updates from Houston.
