Rufino Tamayo was born on this day in 1899. Tamayo was known for works that infused European Modernist tradition with his pre-Columbian heritage. In his work "Heavenly Bodies" (1946), Tamayo contrasts the mentally imposed geometry of constellations with the smooth, earthen curvatures of an awestruck observer.
