The Tree of Secrets

I was on assignment for National Geographic on Turkey.

Though he died long ago, the mystic poet Hajji Bektash Veli still inspires pilgrims to gather in his native town, not far from the lunar landscapes of Cappadocia. A wishing tree stands near the Sufi’s mausoleum. Tens of thousands of pilgrims arrive in August for an annual festival in his honor. With a fervor that has never dimmed through the centuries, they pray, weep, and dance for several days. At the tree, they ask that their prayers be granted. The sacred mulberry tree offers to the wind pieces of fabric, traces of secrets, and wishes tied on its branches.
