If there is one thing I've learned over the years it's that adventure is completely diverse. In my many times to the arctic I've NEVER been stuck out at sea in a boat surrounded by sea ice. We spent about 6 days in the conditions you're seeing here. Breaking free at times but generally for small periods before the shift of the tide or a choked section of ice flow halted our progress. It was disconcerting initially, hearing the boat slamming into the ice and not knowing what the hull was capable of taking. Like anything, you eventually just get use to it. We were fortunate enough to have our Icelandic captain Siggy at the helm, a true Arctic legend and about as good as they get. He's no stranger to these types of conditions and has seen it all, from being stuck at sea in ice for well over a month to even sinking a boat after taking excessive damage!
