Swipe left for the entire view in 4-panel. The Milky Way arching across the southern sky in the Atacama Desert of Chile right at moonset. Just above my head in the second panel is the Large Magellanic Cloud, and the smaller one above the mountains. These are our neighboring satellite galaxies. Note the patchy reddish glow in the last panel. This is called airglow, the natural emission of the Earth’s upper atmosphere, usually very faint and colorless to the eyes but not to the camera.
