*Edit- They were never married. My sentiments are unchanged.* Privileged groups, all throughout history have been mostly completely unaware of their own racism and bias influenced by the time in which they lived. Racism is not as simple as hating all people from a certain group or joining the Klan. Racism is a spectrum, not a binary. It's only looking in the past that we see how many things are normalized, from our own bias, to the bias of those around us, to the institutions that we are apart of. The only way out of that is to listen to People of Color about their experiences and actively educate ourselves on perspectives that are different than our own. Follow anti-racist POC activists on social media and read their books as well. And not just one damn book. If you really care about unlearning racism, make it a practice. (Look at #McGReads for some of the books I've found useful) Otherwise, we'll just end up being the Thomas Jefferson's of 2017. Or at least the 2017 white majority equivalent that never fought against slavery or the institutionalized racism of our time. Pretty much no white person self-identifies as racist. Even Trump. And especially most white Liberals and Democrats can't imagine that they could possibly have been influenced by the culture that we live in. Most of us might not be in the Klan, but we certainly maintain a lack of equality though other actions and inactions on a daily basis. Even the white abolitionists in the U.S. had unconscious bias and racism despite their anti-slavery activism. And they risked much more than most of us white people do for racial justice in 2017. As a result we are sure as shit not exempt. We didn't magically escape unscathed from a society that teaches us and normalizes racism in every aspect of our society from the media to the criminal justice system. We can't control that we grew up in this society. That doesn't make us bad people. But we can control what we do with that knowledge. And how we choose to educate ourselves, others, and force the culture and institutions around us to change. In doing so, we get to decide the type of person that we want to be. Don't be a Thomas Jefferson.
